About
Bruce A. Self has practiced law since 1976 and has led his own successful practice since 1978, offering clients decades of courtroom insight and steady guidance. He focuses much of his practice on criminal defense and family law, with additional representation in other civil and litigation matters. With 90 percent of his practice devoted to litigation, he is experienced in preparing cases, evaluating evidence, negotiating resolutions, and presenting arguments when disputes must be decided in court.
Self earned his J.D. from John Marshall Law School in Chicago in 1976, graduating with distinction. Before law school, he completed a B.S. at the University of Illinois in Champaign in 1970, majoring in marketing, a foundation that supports clear communication, strategic analysis, and client-centered problem solving in complex matters.
Admitted to the Illinois Bar and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in 1976, Self began his legal career as an Assistant Public Defender in Champaign County. That early public defense experience shaped his understanding of individual rights, due process, and the importance of careful advocacy under pressure. Throughout his career, he has remained active in professional organizations, including the Illinois State Bar Association, Kane County Bar Association, and Chicago Bar Association. His long-standing involvement reflects a continued connection to the legal community and a dedication to maintaining professional standards across criminal, family, and litigation practice.
Bruce A. Self has also contributed through the Kane County, Illinois, Pro Bono Program, helping expand access to legal support for people who may otherwise struggle to obtain representation. This service underscores his belief that legal advocacy should be responsive, ethical, and grounded in respect for each client’s circumstances. Clients turn to him for guidance when legal problems affect their freedom, family relationships, finances, or future stability. He approaches each matter with preparation, honesty, and persistence, working to protect clients’ rights, explain available options, and pursue outcomes that address both immediate concerns and long-term consequences during difficult proceedings.
