Barry earned his B.A. degree in anthropology from Antioch College in 1997. He went on to complete his J.D. degree at the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law in 2003. He also served with the Navajo Nation Department of Justice, focusing on labor and employment law issues that affect tribal communities.

He is also admitted to the bars of New Mexico, the Navajo Nation, and Zuni Pueblo. He maintains active memberships in NMCDLA, NMTLA, and the ACLU of New Mexico.
