About

Barry Johnson is a shareholder whose practice focuses on mortgage banking, bank regulation, and consumer finance. He represents mortgage and consumer finance lenders and servicers on state and federal regulatory matters. His work also includes commercial lending, financial services litigation, creditors’ rights and bankruptcy, and real estate. Barry draws on extensive industry knowledge to give clients practical answers that help them structure operations around complex consumer finance laws and regulatory requirements.

Barry earned a B.A. from Rhodes College in 1983, graduating cum laude. He received his J.D. from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1986. During law school, he served as Citations Editor of the Journal of Air Law and Commerce and published work on aviation and spacecraft insurance issues. His academic training helped build the legal analysis and writing skills that support his work with lenders, servicers, and other financial services clients.

Barry began his legal career as a law clerk to the Texas Second Court of Appeals before entering private practice as a litigator. He later worked inside the consumer finance industry as General Counsel to a mortgage bank and Assistant General Counsel to a savings and loan association. This combination of judicial, litigation, and in-house experience gives him a practical understanding of the business and regulatory concerns facing mortgage banking and consumer finance companies.

Barry Johnson is admitted to the State Bar of Texas and is a member of The College of the State Bar of Texas. His professional involvement includes the Dallas Bar Association, Texas Mortgage Bankers Association, and Conference on Consumer Finance Law. He is also a frequent speaker on mortgage lending, consumer regulation, mortgage fraud, identity theft, home-secured lending, and home equity lending. His work reflects a practical, responsive approach to helping financial services clients navigate changing laws and regulations.
