About
Austin R. Foss is an associate attorney with Spotswood Sansom & Sansbury LLC in Birmingham, Alabama. He joined the firm in 2026 after working with the Supreme Court of Alabama. His current role is within a litigation-focused practice, and his background is especially relevant to complex civil disputes and appellate issues. He brings experience preparing legal analysis and written work for the state’s highest court, along with earlier public interest work involving Alabama institutions and communities.
Austin earned a B.A. in History from the University of Alabama and graduated from Cumberland School of Law in 2024. While at Cumberland, he served as editor in chief of Volume 47 of the American Journal of Trial Advocacy, represented classmates in student government, and helped establish the school’s OutLaw chapter. His undergraduate history research received the Summersell Undergraduate Research Fellowship in 2017. These academic roles developed research, editing, and legal writing skills relevant to litigation.
After law school, Austin clerked for Justice Sarah H. Stewart of the Supreme Court of Alabama and continued serving when she became chief justice in January 2025. He was subsequently appointed assistant reporter of decisions, further developing his experience with appellate decisions and judicial writing. Before these roles, he worked on issues involving prison and criminal justice reform, education in Alabama’s Black Belt, and substance use disorder among college students. His experience spans judicial, academic, and public interest settings.
Austin R. Foss approaches litigation work with training shaped by close study of appellate decisions and court procedures. His editorship of a trial advocacy journal and service with the Alabama Supreme Court form a distinctive foundation for research-intensive disputes. His professional interests also reflect exposure to public policy and justice-system issues. He now applies that background in a private litigation setting, where precise written analysis and an understanding of judicial processes are important to representing clients.
