April K. Toy

April K. Toy is a partner in Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP’s Milwaukee office and an experienced trial and appellate lawyer. Toy represents businesses, insurers, professionals, and individuals in civil litigation involving commercial disputes, insurance coverage, bad faith, professional negligence, and general tort claims. Her work includes contract and business tort allegations, claims against lawyers and other professionals, and first-party and third-party insurance disputes in state and federal courts.

Toy earned a J.D. from Marquette University Law School in 2010 and a B.A. from San Francisco State University in 2006. During law school, she received a CALI award and appeared on the Dean’s List. Her education provided a foundation in legal research, writing, advocacy, and litigation procedure that supports her work handling fact-intensive disputes, interpreting insurance obligations, assessing professional liability claims, and presenting complex issues through trial and appellate proceedings.

Toy’s commercial litigation experience includes claims for breach of contract, interference with contractual relationships, breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, misrepresentation, emotional distress, and alleged violations of Wisconsin consumer statutes. She also defends lawyers, nursing homes, and insurance agents and brokers against professional negligence claims. For insurers, she handles coverage matters and extra-contractual disputes, including bad faith issues, helping clients analyze policy language, liability exposure, and litigation strategy.

April K. Toy has received recognition for both legal work and professional leadership, including honors from BizTimes and Diversity MBA and recognition among influential Latino leaders in Wisconsin. Her practice combines trial work, appellate advocacy, and insurance counseling across professional services and other industries. Toy helps clients organize complex factual records, evaluate legal risk, and move disputed matters toward resolution while maintaining a practical focus on the client’s broader business or professional interests.
