Afiya F. Hinkson is a Georgia attorney who has spent more than a decade building a respected reputation in multiple areas of law. She has worked extensively in family and child welfare law, criminal defense, contract disputes, and mediation. Known for her sharp advocacy and compassion, she has guided individuals and families through life-altering legal challenges with dedication.
Afiya began her academic journey at the University of West Georgia, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications, graduating cum laude in 2005. She continued her education at Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law in Macon, Georgia, receiving her Juris Doctorate in 2009. These academic achievements provided her with the foundation to excel in various areas of legal practice.
Afiya’s legal career has included many firsts and notable contributions. In a groundbreaking moment, she became the first African American Special Assistant Attorney General for Forsyth County, representing the Department of Family and Children Services. She regularly advocates in both superior and juvenile courts across Georgia, giving her unique insight into distinct systems, policies, and procedures.
Afiya is also a registered mediator, certified in 2018, and works to resolve conflicts without the high costs of extended litigation. She is certified as a Child Welfare Law Specialist through the National Association of Counsel for Children, further demonstrating her commitment to protecting the rights of children and families.
