About

A. James Spung is a partner at Husch Blackwell whose practice focuses on complex commercial litigation. He represents clients in antitrust matters, class actions, multidistrict litigation, appellate proceedings, and other business disputes. Much of his work involves healthcare organizations, including pharmacy benefit managers, hospitals, medical groups, and pharmacies. He has also handled matters involving real estate, sporting goods, media, food, credit reporting, home security, cannabis, and cosmetics companies.

James earned a J.D. with honors from Emory University School of Law and a B.A., summa cum laude, from Whitworth University. His undergraduate work included journalism and mass communications as well as political science. In law school, he was elected to the Order of the Coif and received academic distinctions. After graduation, he clerked for Judge Emmett Ripley Cox of the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, strengthening his appellate research and writing experience.

James has defended significant antitrust, class action, contract, and appellate matters in state and federal courts. His representative work includes defeating class certification, obtaining summary judgment in a pharmacy benefit manager contract dispute, handling appellate issues for media clients, and resolving complex commercial claims through litigation and settlement. These matters require management of large records, economic issues, expert analysis, and legal questions that can affect entire business models or groups of customers.

A. James Spung has received recognition for commercial litigation, including listings by Best Lawyers, Benchmark Litigation, and Super Lawyers. His practice combines trial-court strategy with appellate experience and a strong understanding of healthcare and other regulated industries. He helps clients address high-stakes disputes involving competition, contracts, class claims, and business operations by developing clear legal arguments, managing complex litigation efficiently, and protecting commercial interests through trial, appeal, or negotiated resolution.
