About

A. James Johnston is a Philadelphia employment and labor lawyer with more than three decades of experience representing employers. He advises and defends for-profit and not-for-profit corporations, along with their directors, officers, and employees, in state and federal courts and before administrative agencies. His clients include major health systems, hospitals, and national employers with multistate operations. His practice focuses on employment discrimination defense, employee relations, regulatory compliance, and practical workplace counseling.

Johnston earned his Juris Doctor from Dickinson School of Law in 1980 and his Bachelor of Arts from Dickinson College in 1977. He later served as a law clerk to Justice William D. Hutchinson of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and the Honorable Roy Wilkinson, Jr. of the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania. His legal education and judicial clerkships provided a strong foundation in legal analysis, court procedure, and the careful evaluation of complex employment disputes.

Johnston handles claims arising under major federal employment laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, Title VII, and Equal Pay Act. He also assists employers with wage and hour matters, collective and class actions, labor issues, and trade secret and noncompete disputes. His counseling work includes internal investigations, employee handbooks, workplace privacy, individual employee rights, and federal and state compliance.

A. James Johnston also holds executive leadership responsibilities as president and chief executive officer. He has secured defense victories in precedent-setting employment cases and regularly shares his knowledge through publications, seminars, and media appearances addressing discrimination, disability, harassment, investigations, and workplace liability. By combining litigation experience with day-to-day counseling, he helps employers assess risk, respond to employee concerns, strengthen policies, and manage sensitive workplace matters with practical judgment.
