Walter A. Metzen

Walter A. Metzen has spent more than three decades helping Michigan consumers pursue a fresh financial start through bankruptcy law. His work centers on individuals and small businesses facing serious debt challenges. He approaches every matter with personal attention, clear guidance, and a belief that bankruptcy can be an honest, lawful solution.

Walter completed his High School Diploma at Milford High School in Milford, June 1981. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Criminalistics and Forensic Science from Michigan State University in June 1987. He later received his Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit School of Law in 1991, where he graduated first in his class with a 3.7 GPA.

Walter is licensed to practice in the State of Michigan and before the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, along with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for both districts. His practice is devoted to consumer bankruptcy, with an emphasis on Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 filings for everyday debt relief.

Walter has handled an exceptional volume of bankruptcy matters, including more than 15,000 Chapter 7 filings and over 5,000 Chapter 13 filings. This depth of experience allows him to anticipate challenges, explain options clearly, and guide clients through complex procedures with steady and informed representation.

Walter has earned numerous professional distinctions throughout his career that reflect his depth of knowledge and commitment to bankruptcy law. He has been a Board Certified Specialist in Consumer Bankruptcy, 2005 American Board of Certification, a designation held by a limited number of attorneys. His academic excellence was recognized with the American Jurisprudence Award for Torts, the American Jurisprudence Award for Civil Procedure, and the Dean’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence. He was also named a Michigan Super Lawyer in Consumer Bankruptcy from 2012 to 2020.
