Walt Burton

Walt Burton is a nationally recognized commercial real estate attorney with a strong focus on retail, multi-family, and industrial development. He advises owners, developers, and investors in acquisitions, leasing, dispositions, and real estate syndications. Known for his strategic business sense, Burton brings a practical, results-driven approach to each transaction.

Burton earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 2005, graduating magna cum laude and joining the Order of the Coif. While in law school, Burton contributed to the Tennessee Law Review. He received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University, graduating cum laude in 1998.

Burton’s practice is marked by a diverse portfolio of accomplishments, including representing national restaurant chains, REITs, and real estate funds in multi-million-dollar deals. His leadership was recognized early on through honors such as the Georgia Bar’s YLD Leadership Academy and the University of Tennessee’s Top Ten Alumni Ten Years Out.

Burton has been named to Best Lawyers in America for Real Estate Law (2020–2026), Mid-South Super Lawyers (2018–2024), and was selected to Nashville Business Journal’s Best of the Bar (2023) and Top 40 Under 40 (2014). Licensed in Tennessee, Georgia, and Illinois, Burton has also served clients in commercial loan workouts, foreclosures, and real estate portfolio acquisitions. He maintains a strong presence in community initiatives, including prior service with the Land Trust for Tennessee.

Prior to co-founding Thompson Burton PLLC, Walt Burton practiced at Troutman Pepper in Atlanta. His legal acumen, coupled with his leadership experience as a former Navy Lieutenant, underscores his disciplined, client-centered approach to law.
