About
Victor J. Bakke is one of Hawaii’s most experienced criminal defense attorneys, known for his aggressive advocacy and extensive trial record. Licensed in Hawaii and Washington, he has also handled federal cases in California, Nevada, and military courts. With over 25 years of experience, Bakke has made more than 6,000 court appearances and successfully defended thousands of clients, earning a reputation as one of the state’s top criminal trial lawyers.
Bakke graduated with honors from the University of Washington in 1988 before earning his J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley School of Law in 1991. During law school, he gained valuable experience as a legal intern with the U.S. Department of Justice in American Samoa and as a judicial extern for U.S. District Court Judge David A. Ezra. He later clerked for Hawaii Supreme Court Associate Justice Yoshimi Hayashi, further sharpening his legal skills.
Bakke’s career began as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for the City and County of Honolulu, where his outstanding work earned him the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney’s “Award of Excellence.” In private practice, he has continued to build on this foundation, focusing on criminal defense, including high-profile cases and complex matters such as sexual assault and serious felony charges. His high acquittal rate and success in defending clients have made him a trusted name in Hawaii’s legal community.
Beyond the courtroom, Victor J. Bakke is frequently sought for expert commentary by local, national, and international media outlets, including NBC, CBS, ESPN, USA Today, and the Los Angeles Times. He has also taught as a guest lecturer at the University of Hawaii’s Richardson School of Law and Hawaii Pacific University. With his trial record, media presence, and dedication to clients, Bakke remains a leading advocate for those facing criminal charges in Hawaii.
