Timothy J. Buchanan

Timothy J. Buchanan is Of Counsel at McCormick Barstow LLP in Fresno, California, where he is part of the firm’s Commercial and Business Litigation Practice Group. He has practiced commercial and business litigation since 1984 and joined the firm in 2001. His work focuses on intellectual property rights, contracts, corporate and business dissolutions, unfair competition, fraud, business torts, alternative dispute resolution, and appeals in state and federal courts.

Buchanan earned his J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1981, where he served on the Law Review Board of Editors. He received his B.A. in History, magna cum laude, from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1977. After law school, he served as a research attorney at the California Court of Appeal, experience that helped build a strong foundation for trial strategy, written advocacy, and appellate practice.

Buchanan has represented clients in major litigation involving contractual disputes, intra-entity business conflicts, securities and other fraud, intellectual property rights, trade secret misappropriation, and unfair competition. His practice includes extensive appellate work, and he also serves as a mediator and arbitrator in commercial and business disputes. He has been selected by parties and appointed by courts to act as a discovery referee in complex litigation and regularly appears in courts throughout Fresno and neighboring areas.

Timothy J. Buchanan is AV Preeminent Peer Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell and was selected to the Northern California Super Lawyers list for Business Litigation from 2013 through 2023. He has served in leadership roles with the Federal Bar Association’s San Joaquin Chapter and is a panel arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. He also teaches business-related law courses at California State University, Fresno, bringing substantial litigation, appellate, intellectual property, and dispute resolution experience to his practice.
