Stephen P. Barry is a partner in Latham & Watkins’ Washington, D.C. office. He represents clients in high-stakes shareholder lawsuits, sensitive government and internal investigations, complex commercial disputes, and appeals. His clients work in many fields, including energy, education, financial services, online media, telecommunications, transportation, biotechnology, defense, and consumer retail.

Stephen earned his JD from William & Mary Law School in 2011, where he was Order of the Coif. He earned his BA in Political Science from the University of Connecticut in 2007, graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He is admitted in the District of Columbia and Virginia.

Stephen handles all parts of litigation, from early advice and fact review to written and oral advocacy. He manages complex internal investigations and defends clients in major regulatory enforcement matters. His work includes issues tied to accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, securities claims, commercial disputes, and appeals.

Stephen has handled high-profile, bet-the-company lawsuits, first-chair trial work, and appeals before the US Supreme Court and many state and federal appellate courts. His strategic advocacy has helped clients secure early dismissal of dozens of major lawsuits that collectively alleged hundreds of billions of dollars in damages.

Stephen has earned recognition from Chambers USA and Bloomberg Law. Chambers USA 2025 noted his work in complex securities class actions and individual securities litigation, and named him Up and Coming in Litigation: Securities. Bloomberg Law included him in They’ve Got Next: The 40 Under 40 in 2023.

Stephen’s securities and investigation work includes matters for Stride, DXC Technology Company, Deloitte & Touche, Ernst & Young, accounting firms, executives, and other organizations. He has secured dismissals, favorable settlements, no-action decisions, and appeal wins in securities actions, shareholder derivative suits, government investigations, and commercial litigation for clients.

Stephen P. Barry also maintains an active pro bono practice, including work in immigration proceedings and veterans’ affairs matters. Earlier in his career, he served as a law clerk to Judge Henry E. Hudson of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
