Sharona Hoffman is the Edgar A. Hahn Professor of Law, Professor of Bioethics, and Co-Director of the Law-Medicine Center at Case Western Reserve University. She is a nationally recognized authority in health law and bioethics, with a practice focus on health information technology, medical big data, aging, civil rights, and emergency preparedness. She has authored two books and over seventy scholarly articles, shaping policy and academic thought.
Hoffman earned her B.A. from Wellesley College, J.D. from Harvard Law School, an LL.M. in Health Law from the University of Houston, and an S.J.D. in Health Law from Case Western Reserve University. She previously served as a judicial clerk for U.S. District Judge Douglas W. Hillman, a litigation associate at O’Melveny & Myers in Los Angeles, and a Senior Trial Attorney with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Houston.
Hoffman’s career includes recognition as one of the most cited health law scholars in the United States, election to the American Law Institute, and receipt of the Case Western Reserve University Faculty Distinguished Research Award. She has also served as a Visiting Scholar with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory University, the National Institutes of Health, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, further expanding her influence in health law and policy.
Beyond her scholarship, Sharona Hoffman lectures nationally and internationally, provides expert commentary in the media, and has received numerous teaching awards. Her expertise in health law, bioethics, employment discrimination, and civil rights continues to shape legal scholarship and guide reforms, establishing her as one of the foremost leaders in law and medicine today.
