Roger L. Bates is a Member with wide experience in complex business and commercial litigation. His work includes business and contract disputes, labor and employment matters, health care litigation, regulatory agency matters, and governmental relations. He has also served as Managing Lawyer at the firm for more than 10 years.
Roger earned his J.D. from Cumberland School of Law in 1982 and his B.S. from Auburn University in 1979. While in law school, he received the Donald E. Corley Best Advocate Award, served on the National Mock Trial Team, and was an associate member of the American Journal of Trial Advocacy.
Roger represents clients in state and federal regulatory matters and supports them on governmental relations issues. He regularly represents postsecondary educational institutions in litigation, compliance, and regulatory matters. He has also served as a specially appointed Deputy Attorney General in Alabama since 1995, representing Alabama agencies in court proceedings.
Roger is admitted to the Alabama State Bar, United States Supreme Court, Alabama Supreme Court, Eleventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, United States Tax Court, and United States District Courts in Alabama. He also served as City Attorney for Hoover and County Attorney for Chilton County, Alabama, in legal matters.
Roger has been recognized for his broad legal work. He is Martindale-Hubbell® AV-rated, listed in Best Lawyers in America® for Commercial Litigation from 2011 through 2026, and named to Alabama Super Lawyers® for Business Litigation from 2008 through 2015. He is also a Fellow of the Alabama Law Foundation.
Roger L. Bates has served on committees of the Birmingham Bar Association and lectured for continuing legal education seminars. As General Counsel for the Alabama Pharmacy Association, he published journal articles on law and ethics. His practice reflects steady work in litigation, compliance, education, health care, employment, and government matters.
