Whittaker became admitted to practice in Alabama in 1971 and later joined the bars of Texas and Arkansas. He practiced with a law firm in Texarkana, Texas, before returning to Enterprise at the end of 1974. He then practiced with Joe S. Pittman until 1993, when he opened his own firm. Over more than five decades, his work has included real estate transactions, estate and probate matters, insurance coverage disputes, and business formations.

Richard W Whittaker has also served as City Attorney for the City of Enterprise and twice as an Alabama State Bar Commissioner representing lawyers in Coffee and Pike Counties.
