About
Richard W. Affolter is an of-counsel trial attorney at Affolter Gannon in Essex Junction, Vermont. His experience includes medical malpractice, insurance law, construction law, personal injury, and mediation. He has represented both defendants and injured clients in negligence disputes. Although his current role is of counsel rather than full-time practice, Affolter remains involved in providing litigation experience and guidance on negotiation and resolution of claims.
Affolter earned a B.A. in 1963 and an LL.B. from Cornell University in 1966. He was admitted to the Vermont Bar in 1966 and to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1970. His legal training preceded decades of civil trial work involving the standards and evidence applied in malpractice and insurance-related litigation.
Affolter previously represented doctors and hospitals facing medical negligence claims and wrote material intended to help physicians avoid malpractice problems. He later moved to representing people injured by medical negligence. His career includes extensive trial practice and work on the resolution of claims where medical issues and insurance coverage may be important. He also has experience with construction disputes and mediation.
Richard W. Affolter has been involved with the Vermont and American Bar Associations and chaired Vermont Bar Association committees addressing fee-dispute arbitration and cameras in courtrooms. His longstanding trial practice informs his work as counsel in matters requiring evaluation of medical evidence, legal exposure, and possible settlement terms. He continues to contribute experience from both sides of medical negligence disputes to the firm’s representation of clients.
