Richard H. Seaton, Sr., is a senior partner at Seaton Law Offices, L.L.P. with more than five decades of legal experience. He represents clients in state and federal courts and focuses on employment law, school law, probate and estate planning law, workers’ compensation, and civil and commercial litigation. His work often involves complex legal disputes and appeals. Over the years, he has helped individuals, organizations, and institutions protect their rights and resolve difficult legal matters with careful strategy and clear advocacy.
Mr. Seaton earned an A.B. from Harvard College in 1959 and later received his L.L.B. from Harvard Law School in 1963. His education provided deep knowledge of constitutional principles, legal analysis, and public law. The rigorous training at these respected institutions prepared him to address complex legal issues and represent clients with thoughtful research, sound reasoning, and a clear understanding of the law as it is practiced today.
Mr. Seaton has extensive experience handling appeals before major courts. He has argued cases before the Tenth Circuit, the Kansas Supreme Court, and the Kansas Court of Appeals. He also appeared twice before the U.S. Supreme Court. In the important case Umbehr v. County Commissioners, he successfully represented the plaintiff in a significant free speech dispute. This victory earned national recognition and led to him being named Lawyer of the Year by Lawyers Weekly U.S.A. for outstanding legal advocacy.
Richard H. Seaton, Sr. has also served the legal community and public institutions throughout his career. He worked for many years as general counsel for Kansas State University, addressing civil rights, employment, constitutional, and administrative law issues. In addition to representing clients, he contributes to legal scholarship and professional leadership. He serves on the Board of Editors of the Kansas Bar Journal and has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America and Who’s Who in America for legal excellence.
