Paul Richard Burglin is a California DUI defense attorney known for decades of focused advocacy in complex drunk driving cases. His practice centers on defending individuals facing serious criminal allegations, license consequences, and professional risks. Through sustained courtroom work, he has developed a reputation for thorough preparation, strategic defense planning, and principled representation.
Paul began his academic path at the University of California, Berkeley, where he completed a degree in Political Science in 1980. He later pursued formal legal education at Gonzaga University School of Law in Spokane, WA. In May 1984, he earned his J.D., establishing the legal foundation that would support a lifelong focus on DUI defense.
Paul has represented more than 7,000 individuals charged with DUI since being admitted to the California Bar in 1985. Over a career spanning four decades, he has served as lead counsel in more than 130 DUI jury trials. His experience extends across Marin County, Sonoma County, and Napa County Superior Courts.
Paul maintains advanced training in the scientific and procedural issues central to DUI litigation. He is a graduate of the University of Indiana’s course on chemical testing and scientific protocols in DUI cases. He also regularly attends the National College of DUI Defense seminar held at Harvard Law School.
Paul has earned recognition within the legal community for his focused work in DUI defense. He is Board-Certified in DUI Defense as approved by the American Bar Association. His distinctions also include Super Lawyers recognition and completion of the Robert F. Borkenstein Course on Alcohol and Highway Safety.
Paul has contributed extensively to legal scholarship and professional leadership. He has co-authored the treatise California Drunk Driving Law from 2004 through 2025. His service includes Dean Emeritus of the National College for DUI Defense, along with leadership roles in regional and statewide legal organizations.
