Nisha G. Thakker

Nisha G. Thakker is a nonprofit organizations attorney and partner at Tenenbaum Law Group PLLC  who advises associations, charities, foundations, and other tax-exempt entities on governance, contracts, risk management, operations, and strategic business matters. Her practice draws on more than a decade of in-house nonprofit legal experience and includes counseling boards, executives, and association leaders on bylaws, ethics, corporate policies, meetings, trademark issues, vendor relationships, and compliance. She also brings experience with real estate industry matters, policy advocacy, and organizational development.

Nisha earned her J.D. from Washington College of Law, American University, and her B.A. in English from George Washington University. She is admitted to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia. During law school, she co-founded the National Youth Justice Alliance, where she helped develop constitutional literacy and civic responsibility programming for detained youth. After law school, she worked in policy advocacy at the Legal Action Center, focusing on criminal justice and health policy issues affecting people reentering society.

Nisha later served as Associate General Counsel for the Northern Virginia Association of REALTORS®, where she advised more than 12,000 members on real estate transactions, contracts, ethics, arbitration, and other legal concerns. She also reviewed vendor agreements, coordinated compliance requirements, supported trademark enforcement, taught real estate law courses, and co-managed a legal hotline. Her subsequent roles included Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships and work with a Washington, DC association management company advising nonprofit clients on operations, risk management, and legal issues.

Nisha G. Thakker is active in the nonprofit and association community and serves on the American Society of Association Executives’ Legal Advisory Council. She has also participated in other ASAE committees and the South Asian Bar Association. Her professional work includes writing and speaking on nonprofit governance, bylaws, ethics codes, meeting contracts, and legal risk. She combines in-house counsel experience, association management knowledge, policy work, and practical legal guidance to help nonprofit organizations address governance, operational, contractual, and compliance challenges with informed, practical organizational decision-making.
