Neal Katyal is an appellate and complex litigation lawyer who has handled some of the most significant legal disputes in the United States. Over the course of his career, he has argued 54 cases before the Supreme Court of the United States and has worked on matters involving constitutional, antitrust, securities, technology, patent, copyright, labor, employment, and criminal law. His legal work has included challenges involving presidential authority, voting rights, and federal regulations.

Neal earned an A.B. from Dartmouth College before obtaining a J.D. from Yale Law School. Following law school, he served as a law clerk for Honorable Guido Calabresi of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and later for Honorable Justice Stephen G. Breyer of the Supreme Court of the United States. He also worked at the Department of Justice, where he served as National Security Advisor in the Deputy Attorney General’s Office and as Special Assistant to the Deputy Attorney General during 1998-1999.

Neal served as Acting Solicitor General of the United States from 2010 to 2011. In that role, he represented the federal government in appellate matters before the US Supreme Court and Courts of Appeals across the country. His work included defending the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, representing former Attorney General John Ashcroft, and handling major environmental litigation involving power plants and climate-related claims. He also argued an important case concerning the patentability of aspects of the human genome before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Neal has received numerous honors throughout his career. His recognitions include Litigator of the Year by The American Lawyer, Appellate Lawyer of the Year by Benchmark Litigation US Awards, and repeated rankings in Chambers USA Appellate Law: Nationwide, Band 1. He has also been recognized by Forbes Magazine, Lawdragon Magazine, Financial Times, and Law360 for his contributions to the legal profession.

Neal Katyal is also a longtime educator, author, and public speaker. He has taught law for more than two decades at Georgetown University Law Center and has served as a visiting professor at Harvard and Yale law schools. In addition to publishing scholarly articles and opinion pieces, he has testified before committees of both the US House of Representatives and the US Senate while remaining active in major appellate and constitutional matters.
