Michael W. Garland

Michael W. Garland brings more than 30 years of legal experience to clients in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, with a practice shaped by trial work, appellate advocacy, and practical counsel. He has tried complex cases in both states and argued before the Rhode Island Supreme Court and the Massachusetts Appeals Court.

Garland earned his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in 1986. He also holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from Brown University, completed in 1980, and a Bachelor’s degree in Politics from Brandeis University, completed in 1979, which together give him a strong interdisciplinary foundation for modern legal problem-solving. His practice includes corporate law, personal injury, domestic law, products liability, premises liability, criminal defense, wills, trusts, estates, zoning, and land use. This broad background helps him advise individuals, families, businesses, and property owners on legal issues requiring preparation, judgment, negotiation, and effective courtroom advocacy when disputes cannot be resolved.

Before his association with McKinnon & Harwood, Garland held significant litigation leadership roles in Massachusetts. He served as Managing Attorney for the staff counsel office of Harleysville Insurance and Nationwide Insurance Company in Worcester and as Associate Director of Litigation at Burns & Farrey, developing substantial trial and case management experience. He is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York. His federal admissions include the U.S. District Courts for Massachusetts and Rhode Island, the First Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court, reflecting his ability to represent clients in complex state and federal matters.

Since 1997, Michael W. Garland has continued his legal career as Managing Attorney at his law office.
