About
Michael P. DeArmitt is a criminal defense lawyer in Columbus, Indiana, with significant experience in trial work, criminal cases, and appeals. After joining the Indiana Bar in 1997, he earned local recognition by securing a not guilty verdict in his first career jury trial for a client accused of felony criminal recklessness. He later won an appeal in a drug-dealing case after arguing that police had unlawfully obtained evidence used at trial.
Mr. DeArmitt earned his undergraduate degree from Franklin College and his Juris Doctor from Indiana University School of Law–Indianapolis. Shortly after law school, he worked for Columbus attorney David A. Nowak, where he substantially authored a successful appeal to the Indiana Supreme Court involving a sentence issued to a mentally ill man convicted of murder. His education and early appellate work helped shape his approach to legal research, courtroom preparation, and criminal defense strategy.
Mr. DeArmitt served as a Bartholomew County deputy prosecutor from 2000 to 2015. In that role, he handled hundreds of trials and worked on major felonies, drug crimes, property crimes, misdemeanors, driving offenses, juvenile cases, traffic tickets, and related matters. Earlier in his career, he also assisted clients with personal injury, wills, estates, family law, divorce, child support, child custody, and small claims.
Michael P. DeArmitt opened his Columbus law office in 2015 and continues serving clients in criminal defense and general legal matters. He is a member of the Bartholomew County Bar Association and has served on local advisory boards, bringing courtroom experience and practical guidance to clients facing serious legal concerns.
