Michael J. Bruner works in the field of intellectual property with a strong focus on biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical patent matters. With more than twenty years of experience, he helps companies protect scientific innovations and develop strategies that support long-term patent portfolio growth.
Michael built his academic foundation through advanced study in chemistry and law. He earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of West Florida in Pensacola in 1994. He later earned a Ph.D. from the University of Florida, Gainesville, in 1999. He earned a J.D. cum laude from Fordham University in 2005.
Michael works closely with companies that develop new medicines and scientific technologies. His work often includes preparing and prosecuting patent applications that protect research discoveries. He also assists clients with building international patent portfolios as new developments and filing opportunities arise during product research and development.
Michael also advises clients on patent strategy throughout the life cycle of a product. His work includes guidance on patentability opinions, freedom-to-operate analysis, noninfringement opinions, and validity issues. He also assists companies with due diligence matters involving investments, acquisitions, licensing arrangements, and collaboration opportunities.
Michael has worked on patent matters related to several pharmaceutical compounds, including REVLIMID®, POMALYST®, NERLYNX®, Translarna™, TAVALISSE®, REZLIDHIA®, and COPIKTRA®. His role has included preparing and prosecuting patent filings related to these compounds as well as working on regulatory extension applications in the United States and other jurisdictions.
Michael J. Bruner also gained research experience before entering the legal profession. He completed postdoctoral research through the American Society for Microbiology Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta between 1999 and 2001, focusing on vaccines and infectious diseases. Michael is admitted to practice law in Georgia and New York and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, supporting clients with complex scientific and patent matters.
