Michael J. Anderson

Michael J. Anderson is a partner at Pierce Atwood LLP in Portland, Maine. His practice focuses on corporate transactions, securities law, commercial finance, mergers and acquisitions, equity investments, private offerings, corporate governance, and antitrust counseling. Michael advises publicly and privately held companies at different stages of development and across a range of industries. He also helps businesses address federal and state antitrust issues involving competitor agreements, pricing practices, distribution relationships, trade association activity, and transaction review.

Michael earned his J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law and a B.A. from La Salle University. During law school, he served as editor-in-chief of the Maine Law Review and worked as a legal intern with the Maine Attorney General’s Office. His legal education and early government experience provided a strong foundation for analyzing corporate, securities, regulatory, and competition issues and for advising clients on transactions that require careful legal and commercial judgment.

Michael has represented companies, investors, and business owners in acquisitions, divestitures, financings, securities offerings, and energy-related transactions. His experience includes work for WEX, Inc. and its affiliates on multiple acquisitions and divestitures, private equity firms on portfolio investments, and businesses in renewable energy, manufacturing, insurance, technology, and consumer products. He also advises on antitrust review in mergers and acquisitions and on compliance issues involving pricing, distribution, and competitor relationships.

Michael J. Anderson joined Pierce Atwood in 2009 after clerking for Chief Justice Leigh I. Saufley of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. He became a partner in 2017 and continues to combine transactional work with antitrust and regulatory counseling. Michael also serves community organizations in Maine, including as a board member of The Center for Grieving Children and through prior service with financial literacy, healthcare, and youth organizations.
