About
Melanie Morgan is a lawyer at Morgan Pilate, LLC, focused on federal criminal defense law. She represents clients facing complex conspiracies, fraud, tax evasion, regulatory violations, serious drug offenses, violent crimes, sex offenses, and immigration-related allegations. Her work emphasizes trial advocacy while addressing the broader consequences that can accompany criminal investigations, charges, and convictions. She has handled matters involving complicated factual records, novel legal issues, and high-stakes federal prosecutions.
Melanie earned her B.A. from Kansas State University. She later attended the University of Kansas School of Law, where she received her J.D. Her education provided a foundation for a career centered on criminal litigation, federal procedure, advocacy, and complex case strategy. Before law school, she worked in public relations for a regional hospital, experience that later informed her approach to communication and persuasive advocacy.
Melanie began her legal career at a boutique criminal defense practice before opening her own office in 2002. She later formed Morgan Pilate LLC with Cheryl Pilate in 2007 and serves as managing partner. Her notable work includes obtaining a complete dismissal after a lengthy federal trial involving allegations of participation in war crimes. She later received the Kansas Bar Association’s first Courageous Attorney Award.
Melanie Morgan is admitted to practice in Kansas and Missouri, several federal courts, and the US Supreme Court. She co-chairs the Defender Services Advisory Group and serves as the Criminal Justice Act panel representative for the District of Kansas. Her recognition includes fellowship in the American College of Trial Lawyers, Super Lawyers selections, and Best Lawyers in America.
