About

Matt Phillips has over two decades of experience in patent law, representing clients in post-grant proceedings before the USPTO and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He handles PTAB reviews, reexaminations, reissues, and high-stakes patent applications for complex electronics and computing technologies.

Matt earned his B.S., M.S., and D.E.E. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Utah, where he specialized in communications, signal processing, control systems, and supporting software. He later received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, completing his legal education in 2000 to transition into patent law.

Matt began his professional path as a communication systems engineer, focusing on advanced military data links in the 1990s. He later transitioned into law, building on his technical background with legal training and hands-on roles at the USPTO and the Federal Circuit. His technical and legal insights make him a trusted advisor for clients.

Matt brings deep, hands-on experience across the patent landscape. He clerked for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and previously served as a patent examiner at the USPTO, giving him rare insight into both the judiciary and the patent office. In private practice, he spent years leading complex patent litigation and appeals and co-founded two law firms. He has also taught patent prosecution as an adjunct professor and designed professional development courses for lawyers and legal teams.

Matt is regularly recognized in leading legal rankings such as Chambers USA, IAM, Super Lawyers, and Best Lawyers in America. He has held key leadership roles in professional groups like the Federal Circuit Bar Association, which honored him twice with its Pro Bono Advocacy Award for his service.

Matt Phillips uses his broad experience—from engineer to law clerk—to guide clients through complex patent processes. His in-depth knowledge and commitment to client success have made him a respected name in intellectual property law.
