Mark Scruggs is a Nashville trial attorney at Mark Scruggs, Trial Attorney, with more than 40 years of litigation experience. He focuses primarily on criminal defense law and has handled hundreds of cases ranging from misdemeanors to capital murder. His practice further includes civil and business litigation involving fraud claims, consumer protection disputes, real estate and construction matters, and other complex cases. He has practiced as a solo attorney since 1991 and personally manages the matters he accepts.
Scruggs earned his J.D. from the University of Tennessee College of Law. He earned his B.A., with honors, from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His legal education preceded a career centered on trial advocacy, public service, criminal defense, and complex civil litigation.
Scruggs began his career as an Assistant City Attorney for Knoxville and Nashville, where he handled litigation and represented police departments in civil rights cases. He later joined Nashville criminal defense attorneys Lionel Barrett and Richard McGee and worked almost exclusively on criminal trials. He expanded his practice into complex civil and business litigation in 2019, including matters involving fraud, contractors, banking disputes, and commercial entities.
Mark Scruggs is admitted to practice in Tennessee and before the U.S. District Courts for the Middle and Eastern Districts of Tennessee. He is further admitted before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and the US Supreme Court. He is a Board-Certified Criminal Trial Specialist and a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He further holds an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
