Louis V. Franklin Sr. is an accomplished American attorney who served as the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama from 2017 to 2021. With decades of experience in prosecution and federal law enforcement, he has been recognized for his leadership in criminal justice and his long-standing service to the Department of Justice. Franklin’s career reflects a deep dedication to public service and the pursuit of justice.
Franklin earned his B.A. from the University of Alabama in 1981, followed by an M.S. from Auburn University at Montgomery in 1983, and a J.D. from Howard University School of Law in 1987. He began his legal career as a staff attorney at the Legal Services Corporation, representing underserved clients. In 1990, he joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama, where he served in multiple roles, including Assistant U.S. Attorney and later criminal chief for nearly sixteen years.
In June 2017, Franklin was nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama. Confirmed by the Senate, he led the office in federal prosecutions involving complex criminal and civil matters, coordinating with federal, state, and local agencies. His leadership strengthened the district’s approach to major criminal investigations, regulatory compliance, and civil enforcement efforts.
After a career spanning nearly 27 years with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Louis V. Franklin Sr. retired in February 2021 following his requested resignation with other U.S. Attorneys under the new administration. His legacy remains one of professional excellence, integrity, and commitment to justice in Alabama and beyond.
