About

Lloyd B. Miller is a partner with Sonosky, Chambers, Sachse, Miller & Monkman, LLP and has practiced with the firm since 1979. He opened its Alaska offices in 1984. His practice focuses on trial and appellate litigation and congressional advocacy for Tribal governments, inter-tribal organizations, Native American health and social service providers, and Native-owned corporations across a wide range of Indian law, self-governance, jurisdictional, and regulatory matters.

Miller earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1978 and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Psychology from Yale University in 1975. He later clerked for Chief Judge James M. Fitzgerald of the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska, experience that supported a career centered on complex federal litigation and appellate advocacy.

Miller has handled major matters involving the Indian Self-Determination Act, Tribal jurisdiction, health and social service programs, labor issues, gaming, child welfare, land claims, government contracts, environmental issues, and congressional legislation. His work has included significant U.S. Supreme Court litigation and large settlements involving contract support costs, as well as national opioid and other multidistrict litigation on behalf of Tribes and Tribal organizations.

Lloyd B. Miller received the Lawrence R. Baca Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024 and has held leadership roles in bar, court, and legal services organizations. His practice reflects decades of work protecting Tribal interests in courts, agencies, and Congress. He helps Tribal clients address high-stakes disputes, funding and self-governance issues, jurisdictional questions, and policy matters that can affect governmental authority, essential services, and long-term institutional resources.
