Lisa H. Schertler is of counsel at Schertler Onorato Mead & Sears, where she focuses her practice on appellate litigation, white-collar defense, and professional ethics matters. Drawing on more than a decade as a federal prosecutor, she now represents clients in criminal, civil, and administrative appeals in both federal and state courts.
Ms. Schertler graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1991 after earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stanford University in 1988, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Her distinguished academic background laid the foundation for a career devoted to appellate practice, constitutional issues, and high-stakes advocacy in some of the nation’s most important courts.
Before entering private practice, Ms. Schertler served as an Assistant to the Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice, where she argued three cases before the United States Supreme Court. She also spent more than a decade as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C., ultimately serving as Deputy Chief of the Appellate Division. Earlier in her career, she practiced at Covington & Burling and worked in the White House Counsel’s Office as Associate Counsel to the President.
Ms. Schertler’s appellate record includes victories in cases involving due process violations, Eighth Amendment challenges, federal sentencing errors, and complex statutory interpretations. She has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, multiple Courts of Appeals, and state appellate courts, earning a reputation for persuasive written advocacy and effective oral argument. In addition, she frequently lectures on legal writing and oral advocacy, sharing insights from her decades of courtroom experience.
