About

Joseph D. Carpini is a Member in Steptoe & Johnson PLLC’s Wheeling office whose practice focuses on mineral title and energy transactional law. He drafts and reviews mineral title opinions for coal, oil, and gas clients and works with the firm’s Division Order Title Opinion Team. His practice combines title analysis with transactional support for energy companies, helping clients understand ownership, leasehold interests, title defects, and other property issues that can affect development, operations, payments, and investment decisions.

Carpini earned his J.D. from the West Virginia University College of Law and a B.S. from West Virginia University. His undergraduate work included mathematics, which supports the detailed analytical approach required in complex title review. Before practicing law, he also gained experience as an abstractor. That background gives him practical familiarity with the records, chains of title, conveyances, and curative documents that must be reviewed carefully when determining mineral ownership and evaluating rights associated with energy assets.

Carpini has drafted division order title opinions, reviewed curative reports and documents, prepared mineral title opinions, and abstracted mineral and leasehold titles in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. His experience also includes due diligence for multimillion-dollar energy transactions. Through this work, he helps clients identify title issues, understand ownership interests, evaluate documents affecting mineral rights, and address problems that could delay development or interfere with the administration of revenue interests.

Joseph D. Carpini brings a focused title and transactional perspective to clients in the energy industry. His combination of legal training, mathematics education, and prior abstracting experience is well suited to matters that require careful review of property records and precise analysis of ownership. He assists exploration and production companies and other energy clients with mineral title, division order, and due diligence needs, helping them make decisions based on a clear understanding of the legal rights connected to their assets and operations.
