John T. Orcutt

John T. Orcutt is a seasoned North Carolina attorney and partner whose practice focuses on bankruptcy and debtor representation. With decades of legal experience, he has focused on helping individuals and businesses navigate complex financial challenges through strategic, knowledgeable, and client-centered bankruptcy advocacy.

John earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Rochester in 1972, then his Juris Doctor from Albany Law School in 1975. His academic background reflects strong analytical training that continues to inform his approach to complex legal and financial issues.

After beginning his legal career in New York, practicing wills and contract law, John relocated to North Carolina in 1987. That same year, he opened his first law office in Raleigh and shifted his focus to consumer bankruptcy law, an area he found both professionally rewarding and impactful for clients facing financial hardship.

Since 1997, John’s practice has been limited exclusively to consumer and business debtor bankruptcy law. Prior to that, he maintained a broad general practice encompassing real estate, workers’ compensation, personal injury, wills and estates, and bankruptcy, providing him with a well-rounded legal foundation.

Over the years, John expanded his bankruptcy practice beyond Raleigh to serve clients in Durham, Fayetteville, Wilson, Garner, and Greensboro. His long-standing presence across multiple regions of North Carolina reflects a commitment to accessibility and consistent representation for debtors statewide.

John is admitted to practice law in New York and North Carolina, as well as before the federal district courts for the Eastern and Middle Districts of North Carolina and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. These admissions support his extensive federal bankruptcy practice.

John T. Orcutt is also an active contributor to legal education, having lectured at the Eastern Bankruptcy Institute on law office management, efficiency, and post-confirmation bankruptcy issues. Through decades of focused practice, he has built a reputation for knowledgeable advocacy, practical guidance, and dedicated service to bankruptcy clients throughout North Carolina.
