John R. Hughes, Jr.

John R. Hughes, Jr. has practiced law since 1973. He focuses on trust and estate planning, elder law, and commercial and residential real estate. He also represents businesses, banks, and individuals in commercial transactions and disputes involving foreclosures, employment, construction, real estate, and other business matters across New Hampshire and Vermont.

John is a graduate of the University of Vermont and Seton Hall University – School of Law. He also earned an LL.M in Taxation from the Boston University School of Law and an LL.M in Elder Law from Stetson University College of Law, supporting his long estate planning practice.

John has more than forty years of trial experience in New Hampshire and Vermont trial courts. He has also appeared in many appeals before the Vermont Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals. His trial work includes business, real estate, contract, employment, foreclosure, criminal, tax, and construction disputes.

John has served in several legal roles during his career. He worked as a law clerk to the Chief Judge of the United States District Court of Vermont. He has also served as a Superior and Federal Court mediator, a federal prosecutor, and a state public defender in Vermont.

John’s professional service includes four years on active duty in the United States Army, followed by service in the Army Reserve and the Vermont National Guard. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, two Bronze Stars, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Ranger Tab, and the Paratrooper Badge for military service.

John R. Hughes, Jr. is admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of New Hampshire and Vermont and before the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the Real Estate, Estate Planning, and Elder Law Sections of the New Hampshire Bar, NAELA, and its New Hampshire Chapter.
