About
John K. Hamer is a Maine attorney with three decades of experience advising public- and private-sector clients. He focuses on employment and labor law, municipal and administrative law, civil litigation, land use, environmental matters, workers’ compensation, and appeals. Hamer assists with discrimination and wage-and-hour claims, employment arbitrations, labor negotiations, administrative proceedings, and general workplace and municipal guidance. He emphasizes early legal consultation to help clients prevent disputes, negotiate when appropriate, and litigate when necessary.
Hamer earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from McGill University in 1990. He received his J.D., cum laude, from Vermont Law School in 1994 and simultaneously completed a Master of Studies in Environmental Law, magna cum laude. His academic training in government, law, and environmental policy provides a strong foundation for analyzing complex employment, municipal, land-use, and administrative issues and developing practical solutions for clients.
Hamer has represented clients before tribunals ranging from local planning boards to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. His appellate experience includes more than a dozen reported decisions before the state’s highest court. He has also defended numerous Rule 80K land-use actions and Rule 80B appeals, litigated labor arbitrations, negotiated labor contracts, and advised municipalities on varied legal concerns. This broad experience supports careful strategy at every stage of a dispute or administrative matter.
John K. Hamer is admitted to practice in Maine and New Hampshire, the federal district courts in both states, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He is a member of the Maine State Bar Association, presents at an annual employment seminar, and has contributed articles to the Maine Bar Journal.
