Joel S. Weissler

Joel S. Weissler is the managing attorney at Weissler Law Group and advises clients on estate planning law, asset protection, elder law, probate, tax planning, and business succession matters. He has more than 25 years of legal practice and is a California State Bar Certified Tax Law Specialist. He helps families and business owners protect assets, prepare for aging and disability, reduce tax exposure, and structure plans intended to preserve wealth across generations while addressing changing personal and financial circumstances.

Joel earned his J.D. from California Western School of Law. He earned his LL.M. in Taxation, cum laude, from the University of San Diego. He is admitted in California and before the US Tax Court, the US District Court for the Southern District of California, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. His advanced tax education supports his work involving estate planning, asset protection, succession planning, and related sophisticated tax reduction strategies.

Joel contributes to legal scholarship through writing on estate and business succession planning. He has served as a contributing and update author for the University of California CEB Press California Estate Planning practice book. He also authored two chapters for its Guide to Business Succession Planning. His published work addresses estate planning tools used to reduce tax consequences when transferring businesses to family members, key employees, or outside business parties.

Joel S. Weissler also serves the elder law community through professional organizations and public education. He is a member of the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys and the San Diego Estate Planning Council. He serves on the board of the San Diego Council on Aging and participates in WealthCounsel. He also speaks to professional and public groups about aging, estate planning, decision-making, special needs trusts, and related planning concerns.
