Jeffrey J. Tierney

Jeffrey J. Tierney is a partner and trial and appellate lawyer in Bozeman, Montana. He represents both plaintiffs and defendants in civil disputes. His practice includes fraud, breach of contract, business conflicts, land use and access issues, insurance coverage, personal injury, and wrongful death. He also handles consumer protection, public records, and constitutional claims. His work takes him from the early stages of a dispute through trial and appeal.

Jeff earned a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University in 2008 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2013. While in law school, he worked with the Wisconsin Innocence Project on efforts to remedy wrongful convictions. A fifth-generation Montanan who grew up in Great Falls, he returned to Montana in 2013. His legal training and work on wrongful conviction cases inform a practice that calls for close attention to evidence and legal rights.

Jeff has represented clients in matters with significant financial and public consequences. In a class action involving condominium owners at Big Sky Resort, he helped secure class certification and a $25 million settlement, along with relief ending an exclusive rental management requirement. He has also represented landowners in a constitutional zoning dispute and a newspaper seeking access to public records. His appellate work includes cases involving insurance claims, shareholder rights, and the independence of Montana’s public universities.

Jeffrey J. Tierney is licensed in Montana and Wisconsin and admitted to several federal courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He served on the Gallatin County Bar Association’s board of directors from 2019 to 2024 and has been named a Super Lawyers Rising Star each year since 2020. He has also served as a Special Attorney General to investigate and prosecute campaign finance violations for Montana’s Commissioner of Political Practices.
