About
Jeff Liebenguth is a Honolulu military defense attorney who represents service members facing courts-martial, adverse administrative actions, nonjudicial punishment, and appeals. His practice includes sexual assault and other sex offense allegations, drug crimes, violent offenses, theft and larceny, fraud, unauthorized absence, AWOL, desertion, and other UCMJ charges. A retired Marine Corps Judge Advocate and former enlisted Coast Guard member, he brings experience as both defense counsel and prosecutor to military criminal cases.
Jeff earned his J.D. from Emory University School of Law and graduated from Amherst College. He also completed the Marine Corps University Resident Command and Staff College, where he received an M.S. in Military Studies. His education, combined with military legal training, supports his work on complex courts-martial, appellate matters, and administrative proceedings. He has also taught military law at the United States Naval Academy and spoken at military criminal-law conferences.
Jeff has litigated felony-level cases involving murder, attempted murder, rape, sexual assault, assault and battery, burglary, child endangerment, fraud, and drug use, possession, and distribution. His military-specific experience includes fraternization, orders violations, unauthorized absence, NJP, Boards of Inquiry, and Administrative Separation Boards. From 2009 to 2012, he served as appellate defense counsel and successfully petitioned military appellate courts for oral argument in numerous cases before the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces and Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals.
Jeff Liebenguth’s licensing and professional affiliations include the Supreme Court of the United States, Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals, Hawaii State Bar Association, and District of Columbia Bar Association. In 2011, he received the Silver C.A.A.F. Tongue award for arguing more military appellate cases than any other appellate defense counsel. He has also written on military-law topics, including alcohol-related sexual assault and the Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act.
