About

Jay Blass Cohen is a Houston attorney whose practice centers on criminal defense and DWI cases, with additional work involving serious personal injuries. He represents people charged with offenses including assault, drug crimes, and other state or federal allegations. His criminal defense approach places particular emphasis on scientific evidence and police testing methods. Jay founded his legal practice in 2009 and serves clients across the Houston area, including Harris County and surrounding counties.

Jay earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University in 2005, majoring in finance with a minor in psychology. He then received his law degree from South Texas College of Law in Houston. He has continued his professional education in forensic chromatography, forensic drug analysis, and the administration and instruction of Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. He also completed Drug Recognition Expert training. These credentials help him evaluate the technical evidence used in alcohol- and drug-related prosecutions.

Jay handles criminal matters where scientific procedures and the accuracy of evidence can be central to the defense. He holds the American Chemical Society’s Forensic Lawyer-Scientist designation and has trained as both a practitioner and instructor in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. His practice also includes serious injury claims arising from motor vehicle and workplace accidents. His experience allows him to address criminal liability questions while maintaining a separate civil injury practice for people harmed by negligence.

Jay was appointed to the Texas Indigent Defense Commission in July 2024 and began serving on the Piney Point Village Planning and Zoning Commission in June 2024. Earlier, he served on the West University Place Zoning Board of Adjustment from 2019 to 2023. His professional affiliations include the American Chemical Society and several criminal defense organizations. Jay Blass Cohen brings extensive forensic training and local public service to a litigation practice focused on protecting clients’ legal rights.
