James A. Dumont

James A. Dumont is the founder of his law firm in Bristol, Vermont. Jim represents individuals, workers, and public interest clients in personal injury, workers’ compensation, employment, environmental, energy, and administrative law matters. His practice includes accident claims, workplace disputes, wrongful discharge, discrimination, harassment, land use conflicts, and complex proceedings before courts and government bodies across Vermont.

Jim graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1975 and earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1978. At Columbia, he served as co-editor-in-chief of the Columbia Human Rights Law Review. He later clerked for Chief Judge James S. Holden of the US District Court for the District of Vermont and worked as a public defender, building a strong foundation in litigation, procedure, evidence, and client advocacy.

Jim has handled a broad range of significant matters involving injured people, employees, municipalities, environmental organizations, and public interest groups. His experience includes motor vehicle and premises liability cases, disputed workers’ compensation claims, retaliation and harassment matters, energy proceedings, zoning disputes, and environmental litigation. He has represented the Grand Council of the Crees, the Sierra Club, and the Town of New Haven, and has appeared in state and federal courts and administrative hearings.

James A. Dumont also brings substantial leadership, teaching, and dispute resolution experience to his practice. Jim taught Environmental and Land Use Litigation at Vermont Law School, served as Reporter for several Vermont Supreme Court rules committees, and remains involved with the Advisory Committee on Rules of Civil Procedure. A trained mediator and recipient of the Vermont Bar Association’s Public Service Award, he is known for careful preparation, practical judgment, and diligent client service.
