J.D. Houvener

J.D. Houvener is a registered USPTO Patent Attorney and the founder of Bold Patents Law Firm in Seattle, Washington. He focuses on helping entrepreneurs, startups, and growing companies protect and maximize the value of their intellectual property. With a strong background in engineering and business, he advises clients on patent strategy and innovation protection. His work includes patentability searches, patent applications, responding to office actions, infringement opinions, and post-grant matters, helping businesses strengthen and manage their patent portfolios with intellectual property law.

J.D. earned a J.D. from Seattle University while working full-time in the aerospace industry. During law school, he focused on intellectual property law and practical clinic courses that supported small businesses. He also earned an M.B.A. from the Albers School of Business at Seattle University with a focus on entrepreneurship and lean operations management. Earlier, he completed a B.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Washington, which built a strong technical foundation for his legal career.

J.D. spent nearly a decade working as an engineer at Boeing before becoming a patent attorney. His work involved payload design, regulatory compliance, systems integration, and project management on the 787 aircraft program. This experience gave him deep insight into complex technologies and innovation processes. Today, he uses that knowledge to understand clients’ inventions better and translate technical ideas into strong patent applications that meet legal and commercial goals.
