Emily M. Chilson

Emily M. Chilson is a partner and registered patent attorney at Andrus Intellectual Property Law, concentrating her practice on patent and trademark prosecution, enforcement, and strategic counseling at both domestic and international levels. Her work supports innovation from product development through protection and commercialization.

Emily earned her Juris Doctor, summa cum laude, from Marquette University Law School, where she was the Technology Editor of the Marquette Law Review. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, cum laude, from Northwestern University. Her engineering background supports her legal analysis of complex mechanical inventions.

Emily advises clients on all aspects of patent and IP strategy, including patentability, infringement analysis, freedom-to-operate (FTO) and clearance. She works with innovators across diverse industries such as internal combustion engines, marine and boating systems, corrugated packaging machinery, wearable apparel and accessories, industrial pumps, and retail merchandising solutions. Emily also develops design‑around strategies to help clients reduce IP risk and avoid conflicts with third‑party patents and other intellectual property rights.

In addition to prosecution and opinion work, Emily drafts and negotiates a variety of IP-related contracts, including LOIs, MOUs, joint development agreements, and sourcing contracts. Her ability to align legal protections with business objectives makes her a valued strategic advisor throughout the product life cycle.

Emily M. Chilson stays current with evolving design patent laws and is active in trade dress enforcement trends. Recognized by Wisconsin Super Lawyers – Rising Stars (2021–2023) and the IAM Patent 1000 in 2023, she is known for her “precise, service-minded approach” and collaborative professionalism.
