David M. Kohn

David M. Kohn is a registered patent attorney and a founding partner of Lewis Kohn & Walker LLP, established in 2009. With extensive experience in intellectual property law, David advises corporate and academic clients on patent prosecution, licensing strategies, and regulatory compliance. His work spans diverse industries, including technology, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices.

David’s expertise includes managing complex patent portfolios and conducting diligence projects for mergers and acquisitions. He provides strategic counsel on early-stage regulatory issues, including NDA and 510(k) filings, and has drafted freedom-to-operate opinions and negotiated licensing agreements. His patent prosecution experience covers various technologies, such as autoimmune and cancer therapies, protein and recombinant DNA therapeutics, stem cell diagnostics, retinal devices, and emulsion-based formulations.

Before co-founding Lewis Kohn & Walker LLP, David worked as an associate attorney at a boutique intellectual property firm in San Diego and as a registered patent agent in the Office of Patent Counsel at The Scripps Research Institute. Additionally, he clerked for the Honorable Jeffrey T. Miller in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

David’s strong scientific background powers his work as a patent and life sciences attorney. He launched his career at Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. in the Pharmacology Department, where he helped discover and characterize novel small-molecule therapeutics targeting cellular receptors. During his graduate studies at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego), he conducted advanced research in neuroscience and developmental biology, giving him a deep technical understanding that he now applies to complex biotech and pharmaceutical matters.

David earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of California at Riverside, and his Juris Doctor from California Western School of Law, where he was an active member of the Student Intellectual Property Law Association.
