David D. Powell Jr.

David D. Powell Jr. has built a long legal career focused on employment and commercial litigation. Over several decades, he has represented employers in complex disputes, workplace investigations, and litigation matters involving the employer-employee relationship. His background in both public service and private practice has given him broad courtroom and management experience across many areas of law.

David earned a B.A. from Santa Clara University in 1980 before receiving a J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 1983. While attending UCLA School of Law, he served as a Managing Editor of the UCLA Law Review. His academic training helped prepare him for a career centered on litigation and trial advocacy.

David began his legal career by serving as a law clerk for the Honorable John L. Kane, Jr. in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado. That experience strengthened his interest in courtroom practice and trial work. He later worked as a Deputy District Attorney in the Denver District Attorney’s Office, where he prosecuted both misdemeanor and felony criminal matters.

David entered private practice in 1990 and spent many years representing employers in employment litigation and commercial disputes. He handled internal investigations, advised businesses on workplace legal concerns, and litigated matters involving restrictive covenants and non-compete agreements. His experience also includes trying significant employment-related cases to verdict and pursuing injunctive relief when necessary.

David D. Powell Jr. later served as a Deputy Attorney General in the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, where he managed multiple legal units within the State Services Section. In that position, he supervised legal teams handling matters involving health care, education, labor, procurement, human services, and public utilities. His broad litigation background and leadership experience continue to support clients facing challenging legal disputes and employment-related matters.
