David Boies is a nationally recognized trial lawyer known for his exceptional courtroom skills and groundbreaking legal work. With a legal career spanning decades, he has led many historic cases in antitrust, constitutional law, and complex civil litigation. His advocacy has shaped pivotal moments in American legal history and policy.
David holds a B.S. from Northwestern University and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Redlands. He earned his LL.B., magna cum laude, from Yale Law School, and later completed an LL.M. at New York University School of Law. He has received honorary degrees from several institutions, including NYU and New York Law School.
David began his public service as Chief Counsel and Staff Director of two U.S. Senate committees in the late 1970s. From 1991 to 1993, he represented the FDIC, recovering over $1 billion in losses tied to the savings and loan crisis. His work reflected a strong commitment to justice and government accountability.
David played a central role in the U.S. Department of Justice’s antitrust case against Microsoft between 1998 and 2000. He also served as lead counsel for Vice President Al Gore during the contested 2000 presidential election. His litigation in Perry v. Brown helped establish marriage rights for gay and lesbian citizens under the Constitution.
David has received numerous accolades, including The American Lawyer’s Lifetime Achievement Award (2024), the ABA Medal, and recognition as Litigator of the Year. He has also been listed in Best Lawyers in America annually since 1987 and honored multiple times by Lawdragon, Who’s Who Legal, and Chambers USA for his work in antitrust and litigation.
