David A. Starkweather is the Managing Partner at Stuart & Branigin and Co-Chair of the Corporate + Nonprofit Group. With more than 30 years of experience, he advises businesses, nonprofits, and individuals on corporate, tax, and estate planning matters.
David earned his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law through its Executive Program. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from Indiana University School of Law and was inducted into the Order of the Coif. He also holds a B.A. from Wheaton College.
Originally a litigator, David has shaped his practice to serve as outside general counsel to businesses and nonprofits. He provides guidance on entity formation, contracts, financing, employment matters, dispute resolution, succession planning, and strategic transactions, including mergers and acquisitions and sales of real estate, stock, and membership interests.
With advanced training in taxation, David is frequently consulted on the tax aspects of transactions, employee incentive plans, and complex estate matters. He drafts and advises on deferred compensation and other incentive programs, working closely with accountants and advisors to structure tax-efficient solutions while minimizing future risk.
David also represents nonprofit organizations, advising on formation, tax-exempt status, unrelated business taxable income, governance, and real estate transactions. His nonprofit clients range from community foundations to major educational and charitable institutions.
In his private client practice, David assists individuals and families with wills, trusts, and fiduciary planning. He has significant experience guiding multiple generations and helping business owners implement tax-efficient succession strategies.
Admitted in Indiana and several federal courts, David A. Starkweather is recognized by Martindale-Hubbell for high ethical standing and remains committed to delivering thoughtful, strategic counsel.
