David A. Cohen

David A. Cohen is a New Jersey labor and employment lawyer at Chiesa Shahinian & Giantomasi PC who advises public and private-sector clients on complex workplace matters. He counsels employers on collective bargaining, labor strategy, contract administration, grievances, disciplinary proceedings, and unfair practice charges. David earned his B.A. in economics, cum laude, from Lehigh University in 1988. He received his J.D. from American University – Washington School of Law in 1991. He is admitted to practice in New Jersey, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. After law school, he served as a judicial clerk for Judge William Wenner of the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. His early legal experience included associate and partner roles in private practice.

David later served as Director of the New Jersey Governor’s Office of Employee Relations after an appointment by Governor Chris Christie. He acted as the governor’s spokesperson during collective negotiations with unions representing executive branch employees. At Rutgers University, he served as Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel. He later became Vice President for University Labor Relations and Special Counsel to the University President. He developed negotiation strategy and supervised labor contract administration.

David A. Cohen combines private practice, public service, higher education, and municipal leadership experience. He served on the Berkeley Heights governing body for nearly 12 years and was mayor for almost a decade. He also spent more than 12 years on the township planning board. His professional recognition includes election as a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.
