About
Dan Vondra is an experienced Iowa attorney known for strong criminal defense, immigration-related advocacy, trial work, and appellate practice. Admitted to the Iowa Bar in 2004, he has represented clients in state and federal courts throughout Iowa and across the United States with dedication and skill.
Dan graduated from the Order of the Coif at the University of Iowa College of Law in 2004, an honor reserved for students graduating in the top 10% of their class with a faculty recommendation. His academic excellence helped build the foundation for his rigorous legal analysis and advocacy.
Dan gained early trial experience shortly after law school, securing an acquittal in a Johnson County felony forgery case. He later represented a client in a child endangerment matter that reached the Iowa Supreme Court, strengthening his courtroom and appellate experience in complex criminal cases.
Dan has appeared before the Iowa Supreme Court in significant matters, including Morales Diaz v. State of Iowa. In that landmark post-conviction case, he successfully argued that a guilty plea was not knowing and voluntary because immigration consequences had not been properly explained.
Dan also has extensive federal trial and appellate experience. He is admitted to Iowa’s Northern and Southern District Courts and has appeared in federal courts in Davenport, Des Moines, and Cedar Rapids. His Eighth Circuit victory in United States v. Timmons addressed hearsay evidence in revocation proceedings.
Dan Vondra is a frequent speaker on criminal, immigration, and trial law topics for community and continuing legal education programs. His work reflects advanced knowledge of criminal procedure, immigration consequences, appellate advocacy, trial strategy, and evolving legal issues affecting clients in serious and complex cases.
