About
Dan Higgs brings over two decades of experience as a patent practitioner, offering clients trusted counsel in patent procurement, post-grant proceedings, and strategic IP portfolio management. He has guided companies through product clearance, invalidity opinions, non-infringement analysis, and due diligence investigations tied to acquisitions and investments.
Dan holds a degree in applied physics and earned his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Berkeley Law is consistently ranked as a top institution for intellectual property law. Early in his career, he worked at one of the largest IP law firms in the United States, where he handled the full scope of patent work.
Dan later moved to a large general-practice law firm where he spent nearly ten years focusing on patent prosecution and post-grant proceedings. His work during this time gave him deep insight into handling complex patent matters from application to challenge defense.
Dan went on to serve over seven years as Chief IP Counsel at MedVenture, an investment firm focused on health and wellness technologies. He assessed IP risks and opportunities, conducted acquisition due diligence, and managed patent strategies for companies at all growth stages, from startups to established businesses.
Dan managed portfolios covering a wide variety of medical technologies, including endoscopes, stents, catheters, analyte monitors, orthopedic implants, and intraocular sensors. His experience also includes non-medical innovations such as lidar systems, weather detection tools, semiconductor processes, nanostructures, and automotive safety components.
Dan Higgs has collaborated closely with CEOs, boards, and business leaders to align IP strategies with company goals. His comprehensive understanding of both technical and legal challenges enables him to protect and leverage innovations across industries with precision and clarity.
