Charles R. Bailey

Charles R. Bailey is the managing member of Bailey & Wyant, PLLC’s Charleston, West Virginia office and maintains a broad civil litigation practice. Bailey handles labor and employment, construction contracts, consumer protection, insurance coverage, governmental liability, medical malpractice, products liability, aviation, professional liability, banking, bankruptcy, and creditor-debtor matters. His work also includes employment benefits, mortgage servicing claims, and disputes involving management and hospitality businesses.

Bailey earned his J.D. from West Virginia University College of Law in 1982 and a B.A. in Journalism from West Virginia University in 1976. He is admitted to practice in West Virginia, before the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of West Virginia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. His education and extensive litigation background support his work across complex civil disputes.

Bailey has handled a wide range of reported cases involving employment, governmental liability, insurance coverage, education, consumer finance, health care, and other civil matters. His appellate and trial experience includes cases before West Virginia courts and federal courts, including disputes involving public agencies, financial institutions, insurers, employers, and professional service providers. He also frequently lectures on litigation tactics, professional liability, insurance coverage, labor and employment law, civil rights, and governmental liability.

Charles R. Bailey has been recognized by Super Lawyers since 2018 and Best Lawyers in America since 2018 and received the Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia’s Defense Attorney of the Year recognition in 2017. He was inducted as a Fellow of the West Virginia Bar Association in 2022 and was included in West Virginia Executive’s 2025 Lawyers & Leaders class. His professional involvement includes the Defense Research Institute, American Bar Association, and West Virginia Defense Trial Counsel.
